This isn’t just any compost!
Tucked away in the countryside just south of Stockholm is a small farm surrounded by beautiful Scandinavian forest. This farm was where we first started experimenting with soil science, with the aim of crafting ‘super’ compost that would be able to restore soil back to life.
Over many dedicated years we conducted our own practical research – trawling through papers, leading scientific trials and meeting with other skilled composters and scientists from all over the world – until we were able to refine our own method. Our unique approach to compost making ensures that our products consistently reach the highest standards and work to replenish the soil, creating the right conditions for optimum plant growth, health and yields – because healthy soil ultimately leads to happy healthy plants. We now produce superior grade ‘artisan’ compost that is still hand-turned with love and care.
Just like a good baker will have a mother sourdough starter (the most flavoursome are many generations old), we have a ‘mother compost’ that we inoculate into each of our commercial compost batches. We’re so fond of our mother compost that we’ve named it Hen – which is a Swedish gender-neutral personal pronoun. Hen also has a twitter account @henthecompost – meaning anyone can follow the life of what must be the world’s most loved compost heap!
Our compost in the community
Since compost makes up the foundations of the operations at 59 Degrees and is central to everything we do, we invest a large percentage of our time back into research and development. In fact, a quarter of our profits go back into R&D, which means that we can ensure our compost is the best it can possibly be, whilst at the same time paving the way for further horticultural innovation.
Scientific trials have revealed astonishing results and our clients have also reported significant increases in plant health and growth following the application of our products. 59 Degrees are now working alongside Skillebyholm College, and together will be running further research into the application of our products.
What’s super about our compost?
Having spent years developing the perfect formula, we now have a specific recipe for our compost that combines a balance of high nitrogen materials with woody, fibrous ones. No peat is used in our compost, so you don’t have to worry about depleting carbon stores; in fact, by adding our compost to your soil, you’ll actually be enhancing your organic matter content and enhancing your soils own carbon store.
Every batch of our compost is formed from a specific blend of locally sourced products (up-cycling organic by-products which helps reduce waste), which are carefully watered and turned by hand to ensure that there are ZERO pathogens. For those who don’t know, 59 Degrees obtained its name from the latitude of its location in Sweden, AND because 59°C is the temperature at which pathogenic species are destroyed.
As the raw materials are decomposed, another one of nature’s intelligent systems is acting – as the compost reaches these pathogen-killing temperatures, very few beneficial species are destroyed, resulting in compost that has a huge diversity of microorganisms. These soil critters are an essential part of the soil food web and can radically transform lifeless ‘dirt’ into healthy soil that has great structure and resilience – it’s like taking a shot of pro-biotic yoghurt!
Once we’ve approved that the compost is fully mature, we check its composition in the lab. If it reaches our standards then it’s ready to be used as super compost: bringing soil back to life!
